The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA), has announced the dates of its free asbestos awareness training courses, as part of its national campaign to highlight the dangers of asbestos.
Members of the national Association who are involved in the Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe campaign, which takes place during September and October this year, have offered over 3500 hours free asbestos training to those who attend in an attempt to further raise the profile of the importance of the correct handling of asbestos.
“It is imperative that any tradesperson who may come across asbestos during the course of their work is aware of the legal requirement and furthermore knows how to protect themselves and those around them,” said Craig Evans, General Manager of the UK Asbestos Training Association. “Asbestos Awareness training is the absolute minimum requirement for anyone who may come into contact with the fibres although this level of training does not permit them to work with any forms of asbestos.”
The Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe campaign is predominantly aimed at individual tradespeople, DIY enthusiasts and small companies who may not otherwise have previously known about, or received such training.
UKATA sets standards in asbestos training and ensures its members meet those standards. The Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe campaign was launched at the Safety and Health Expo at ExCel in London this year in June.
“Around 5,000 people a year still die from asbestos related illnesses in the UK,” said Craig. “At UKATA, we are striving to get the message across that professional training can change the way today’s workers operate so they don’t put their lives at unnecessary risk. Too few have been properly trained in how to be aware and in turn safely handle asbestos which is an issue which must change.”
