Free seminars from the British Safety Council at Health & Safety North, Bolton, 8-9 October 2014

The British Safety Council will be running a programme of free health and safety seminars and promoting our full range of health, safety and environmental management products and services for business and individuals on Stand E2 at the Health & Safety North exhibition, taking place at the Bolton Arena on 8-9 October 2014.

As the official educational partner for the Health & Safety North exhibition run by Western Business Exhibitions, the British Safety Council has organised seven seminars over two days to provide an expert insight into important developments around the management and regulation of health and safety in the workplace. Delivered by experts from the legal and occupational health and safety fields, these free-to-attend presentations will cover topics such as trends in enforcement and prosecution; preventing work-related respiratory illness and disease; communicating the health and safety message to employees; and preventing slips, trips and falls.

On Wednesday 8 October, Kevin Bridges, a Partner at Pinsent Masons law firm, will examine some significant recent criminal prosecutions of businesses and individuals for health, safety and corporate manslaughter offences and the likely impact of these judgments for employers. Ian Travers, Deputy Director of the Health and Safety Executive’s Chemicals Regulation Directorate, will explain how the lessons learned from managing health and safety risks in the onshore major hazards sector, as chemical plants and oil refineries, can be successfully applied to other industry sectors.

One highlight of day two is a presentation by Ann Goodwin, a chartered marketer and Managing Director of Win Marketing, on how marketing and public relations techniques can be harnessed to effectively communicate health and safety information to everyone at work. Health and safety consultant Mark Thomas will also deliver a talk on Thursday 9 October on how to prevent slip and trip incidents, the most common cause of injury in British workplaces. The full list of seminars and speakers is given below and at http://www.healthandsafetyevents.co.uk

British Safety Council staff will also be present on Stand E2 to explain the business and related benefits of our full range of products and services for the effective management of safety, health and environmental risks. These include health, safety and environmental courses and qualifications for directors, managers, supervisors and workers delivered either face-to-face, via e-learning or distance learning; auditing, advice and consultancy; the extensive benefits of membership of the British Safety Council; and our international health, safety and environmental management award schemes.

Neal Stone, the British Safety Council’s Policy and Communications Director, who has overseen the development of the seminar programme and will be chairing the seminars together with Steve Sumner OBE, said: “The Health and Safety North Exhibition and Conference is the premier ‘must-attend’ annual event for all those involved in the management of workplace health and safety risks in the North of England and beyond.

“The seminars will shine a light on some of the major workplace health and safety risks employers have to manage and seek to improve employers’ understanding of how to protect everyone at work from injury and ill health, which is estimated to cost UK society £13.8bn each year.

“Our expert speakers have extensive knowledge and a proven track record of ensuring health and safety compliance and driving improvements, and there will be ample opportunities to question them on issues of concern and interest. Attendance at the seminars also provides an opportunity to gain vital credits for continuing professional development (CPD) schemes overseen by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

“The staff of the British Safety Council look forward to meeting visitors on Stand E2 where we will be pleased to explain how we can help you and your organisation, through our extensive range of products and services, meet the challenge of effectively managing occupational health and safety risks.”
